TravelSIM Team Australia Maintains Momentum at Dakine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship 11th June 2013
COOLANGATTA/QLD (11th June, 2013): TravelSIM Team Australia has continued its solid momentum at the Dakine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Nicaragua with 11 of its 12 surfers still in the main draw after Day 2.
The event at the beachbreak of Playa Jiquiliste in Tola has attracted more than 300 of the world’s best Under 18 surfers from more than 30 countries.
All of the Under 18 boys advanced to Round 3 of the main draw with Luke Hynd (Tallebudgera Valley, QLD – 15.10) one of the standout surfers winning his heat on Day 2 . Also advancing after finishing second in their heats were Matt King (Ulladulla, NSW – 12.07), Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW – 12.10) and Eli Steele (Moffatt Beach, QLD – 12.36).
Chris Zaffis (Angourie, NSW – 13.60) led the way in the Under 16 boys winning his heat, while Jacob Wilcox (Margaret River, WA – 11.77) and Kai Hing (Wurtulla, QLD – 12.03) will join him in Round 3 of the main draw after finishing second.
Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta, QLD – 9.00) has been relegated to the repechage rounds after finishing third in his heat.
If a surfer is knocked out of the main draw for finishing third or fourth they still get a chance to qualify for the final through the repechage rounds but must finish first or second in each heat to continue to advance. Bruce has nine repechage heats to survive before the final.
Kirsten Ogden (Suffolk Park, NSW – 12.67) and Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW – 14.17) both won their Round 1 heats in the Under 18 girls to advance to the second round of the main draw.
In the Under 16 girls, Isabella Nichols (Coolum Beach, QLD – 11.06) won her heat to advance to Round 2 as did Holly Wawn (Newport, NSW – 9.47) who finished second in her heat.
At last year’s titles TravelSIM Team Australia finished second behind Hawaii.
