TravelSIM Team Australia Continues Strong Charge at ISA World Juniors 14th June 2013
COOLANGATTA/QLD (14th June, 2013): Chris Zaffis (Angourie, NSW) led another strong day for TravelSIM Team Australia at the Dakine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Nicaragua.
The event at the beachbreak of Playa Jiquiliste in Tola has attracted more than 300 of the world’s best Under 18 surfers from more than 30 countries and will finish on Monday morning (AEST).
TravelSIM Team Australia still has seven surfers in contention in the main draw, while three survived repechage heats in 2-4ft (1.1.5m) surf on Day 5 and another slipped from the main draw into the repechage rounds.
In the Under 16 boys, Zaffis was one of the top performers of the day scoring 16.83 to advance to Round 5 of the main draw along with Jacob Wilcox (Margaret River, WA – 14.50) who also won his heat.
Kai Hing (Wurtulla, QLD – 7.66) slipped to a fourth in his main draw heat of the Under 16 boys and will attempt to qualify for the final through repechage with Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta, QLD). Bruce survived two repechage heats on Day 5 with a second and a first with scores of 9.14 and 11.70. Hing and Bruce will meet in the next four-man repechage round and must share first and second to stay in the event.
If a surfer is knocked out of the main draw for finishing third or fourth they still get a chance to qualify for the final through the repechage rounds but must finish first or second in each heat to continue to advance.
Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW – 13.60) and Luke Hynd (Tallebudgera Valley, QLD – 11.67) collected a first and second in their heats to advance to Round 5 of the main draw of the Under 18 boys. Eli Steele (Moffatt Beach, QLD – 11.66) won his second heat of repechage to stay in contention.
Isabella Nichols (Coolum Beach, QLD – 8.84) won her first round of repechage and has four more to survive to reach the final.
Kirsten Ogden (Suffolk Park, NSW), Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW) and Holly Wawn (Newport, NSW) did not surf on Day 5.
